Qurei criticises Abbas for considering negotiations as the only option

AMMAN, (PIC)-- The Palestinian chief negotiator, Ahmad Qurei criticised the line of politics pursued by President Mahmoud Abbas, during a meeting with the PA ambassadors to Arab states.

In a report published by the London-based al-Quds al-Arabi it was stated that Qurei criticised Abbas's slogan which says that negotiations is the only strategic option open to the Palestinians describing such a slogan and the practical implementation of it as a serious political blunder and that the Palestinian people should have many strategic options instead of being restricted to negotiations, considering the shape of the present negotiations.

Qurei was also reported to have said during the meeting, which took place in Amman last Monday, that to consider negotiations as the only strategic option is a bet that is not compatible with the great sacrifices of the Palestinian people and does not take into consideration the real situation on the ground, pointing to the fact that there is a high probability that the negotiations will fail and turn into a punishment for the Palestinian people.

The Fatah leader, who participated in many rounds of covert and overt negotiations with the Israeli occupation, said that wagering on negotiations alone means losing because the negotiations are a lame duck and ineffective, admitting that long years of negotiations have not produced anything tangible for the Palestinian people on fundamental issues such as Jerusalem, water, refugees and the Palestinian state.

Qurei's frank comments caused great surprise and debate amongst around 20 participants in the closed meeting which was held in one of Amman's hotels, as these comments contradicted President Abbas's line of politics.

Meanwhile, many ambassadors, especially those working in the Gulf states, complained that they are increasingly being seen as ambassadors of the Palestinian Authority and not of Palestine and that funds are not being channelled through them to the Palestinian people as the public has more trust in Hamas.

Adoption of the slogan peace is our strategic option and that negotiations are the only strategic path to achieve it, hence dropping all other options not necessarily the military option although this should not be ruled out under any circumstances have led us to a deep dark hole and to an incredibly vulnerable state of affairs, where Israel and the US can dictate the agenda. If these slogans have done something they have made peace more difficult to achieve if it ever can be achieved. This path led to the enhancement of intransigence in the position of the Israeli governments towards peace and opened its appetite to extract more free concessions from the Arabs as well as the hopeless and extremely weak Palestinian authority. It has given the Israeli governments the freedom to grab more of the 1967 occupied territories and to an intensification of the Jewish settlement’s program thus changing the demography of the area and destroying the geographic integrity and continuity of the 1967 occupied territories,

rendering the possibility of establishing a viable Palestinian state on even less than 10% of historic Palestine an unachievable dream, something which has led many recently to go back to the forgotten idea of having a bi-national state rather the two states option. I find it extremely hard to comprehend the words coming from President Abbas because it is coming from someone who not only been involved for the last 15 years in negotiations with Israel , but as someone who was a main mover to the infamous Oslo agreement. The question is hasn’t he learnt the lesson. Fifteen years of futile and pointless negotiations have led to nothing of any significance or substance. The main issues of ending the occupation, borders, Jerusalem , the return of refugees , the resources especially water and sovereignty are still there as they were 15 years ago.

Apart from that the ongoing ‘negotiations’ have given the world the wrong impression that there is a peace process. It has given the world the impression that Israel is not an occupying power, apart from the dangerous fact that Israel has used it successfully as a vehicle and a springboard to normalize relations with many Arab states. The Arab states as well as the world are saying why should we be more Catholics than the Pope? Is it not the time to stop this self-deception and bring an end to these fruitless negotiations? Is there anything after these 15 years which has not been said or discussed to the point of exhaustion? And please don’t tell us that we will wait for the new Israeli government or the new US administration to start another vicious cycle of nothingness.
