Bahar: PLC supports elections after national reconciliation
[ 09/11/2009 - 08:20 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- Dr. Ahmed Bahar, the first deputy speaker of the Palestinian legislative council (PLC), has emphasized that the PLC supports general elections only after national reconciliation away from foreign intervention and conditions of the international quartet committee.

Bahar told a students seminar at the Islamic University in Gaza city on Monday that Mahmoud Abbas does not have the constitutional right to call for elections since his term in office as PA chief had expired last January.

He charged that Abbas's election decree constituted a "serious constitutional violation" because it asked all candidates to legislative and presidential elections to accept in writing the PLO's program that stipulates abiding by the Oslo agreements that shun and prosecute resistance.

The decree is also in violation of the Cairo agreement in 2005 and the Egyptian reconciliation document, Bahar said.
