DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- Khaled Mishaal, the head of Hamas political bureau, hailed Friday the UN human rights council’s endorsement of Goldstone’s report on Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip, saying it is a victory for the Palestinian people and the international justice.
In remarks to Al-Jazeera satellite channel, Mishaal expressed his appreciation to the legal and human rights organizations that contributed to the success of the report and the condemnation of the Israeli occupation.
He expressed hope that this would be the beginning of a stage of international justice for the Palestinian people and further disclosure of Israel’s ugly face.
The Palestinian government headed by premier Ismail Haneyya also hailed the human rights council’s resolution as a triumph for the justice and the blood of the victims and saluted the Palestinian people for going on angry marches and protests that forced the Palestinian Authority (PA) to reconsider its previous decision against Goldstone’s report.
It also expressed thanks to the countries that supported the resolution especially Egypt which refused any delay in the vote on the report.
For his part, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum strongly denounced the PA envoy to the UN human rights council for calling to hold all parties to the conflict accountable, saying that this position denied the Palestinian people’s right to defend themselves.
Spokesman Barhoum said that the majority vote on Goldstone’s report confirmed the credibility of Hamas and its earlier positions towards the "crime" of delaying the report.
For his part, Dr. Yousuf Al-Mansi, the Palestinian minister of public works and housing, stated Friday that the vote in favor of Goldstone’s report must be a prelude to ending the Israeli siege on Gaza and allowing in construction materials to rebuild what was destroyed by Israel during the war.
The human rights council’s endorsement of the report was also hailed by the Movement of Islamic Jihad in Palestine as a big triumph for all forces and organizations which stood in the face of attempts to undermine the report.
It said that the vote in favor of the report confirmed that there was no real justification for delaying the report, adding the condemnation resolution is an opportunity that must be used to isolate and boycott the Israeli occupation state.
For her part, Khaleda Jarrar, a politburo member of the popular front for the liberation of Palestine, said that the pressure which was made by the Palestinian public opinion on the PA after it postponed two weeks ago the vote on Goldstone’s report contributed to the reactivation of the report once again and led to its success.
Jarrar considered the vote in favor of the report a major success that should be followed by other steps in the UN General Assembly and the international criminal court.
The European campaign to end the siege, for its part, considered the human rights council’s approval of the report an important step that should be invested through taking practical steps to condemn the Israeli occupation and prosecute its leaders at the international criminal court in The Hague.
